The Ring Two

Overall Rating: *
The Ring Two @ IMDB

Synopsis:
The terrifying, VHS-haunting, ghost is back in this sequel to the 2002 horror movie. This time Samara (Daveigh Chase) has taken a personal interest in Aidan (David Dorfman). Samara wants a mother and she’ll do anything to get one…

Review:
This one is going to be short and sweet. I really, really didn’t like this movie. The Ring was unique, horrifying, and intense. That is everything that The Ring Two is not. They broke all of the rules the setup in the first film. Samara is not bound by the tape. She is free to haunt anyone she pleases. She can possess bodies and she wants a mother?! Ok so the mother part isn’t such a stretch, but part two supposedly takes place six months after the original. So did she not want her mommy for the last six months? The movie also plays way to predictably. You can see every death coming a mile away and I just wasn’t scared.

I’m not going to waste any more time with this one. Rent The Ring if you haven’t seen it, but don’t waste your time with The Ring Two. Its not even worth the rental (I regretted getting it from Blockbuster).

Doom @ IMDB

Synopsis:
When things go terribly wrong at a Martian research facility, the marines are sent in to secure the situation. Sarge (The Rock) and his team of marines must fight genetic abominations hell-bent on eating them while protecting the gate back home called the Ark. Crazy weapons and hand-to-hand combat bring all of the action from the hit game to the big screen.

Review:
I gave this movie three out of five stars, but that rating needs a few qualifications. I have to say that the movie was entertaining. It also was a pretty good adaptation of a video game to a movie. For a bad adaptation, see House of the Dead. Let be honest though, this movie didn’t have anything that screamed “great!” I’ve seen action movies that grab you and they really keep you engaged for the full two hours. It was definitely entertaining, but it doesn’t quite compare to movies like The Transporter or Kiss of the Dragon.

Kicking & Screaming @ IMDB

Synopsis:
When Phil Weston (Will Farrell) gets the opportunity to coach his son’s soccer team, he’s gets the chance to prove he’s nothing like his overbearing and belittling father. Phil quickly loses himself in the stuggle to win as we see that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Review:
Everything I heard and read about this movie said that it wasn’t going to be good. It didn’t do that well at the box office and most people that saw it said it wasn’t any good. Personally, its tough to pass up a Will Farrel movie, regardless of what people say about it. I’m happy to report that everyone was wrong, at least in my opinion. I got a kick out of this movie, no pun intended.

The Fog

Overall Rating:*
The Fog @ IMDB

Synopsis:
A quiet coastal town is terrorized by a mysterious fog that seems to have a life of its own. Vengence is in the air as ghosts come to claim what is theirs from the descendents of thier murderers. This is a remake of the classic 1980 horror flick John Carpenter’s The Fog.

Review:
This movie was an utter disappointment. I didn’t have high hopes when I went to see it, but I did have some. There is a long list of things that were wrong with this movie, and a very short list of things that were right. The plot can’t be criticized that much, though it was changed from the original which I don’t think helped the movie at all. Of course the biggest problem was pretty simple: it wasn’t scary. I remember seeing the original, and being afraid. Of course I saw it as a child, which makes a difference I’m sure, but I would expect the new version to at least have some shock value.

Serenity

Overall Rating:****
Serenity @ IMDB

Synopsis:
An interplanetary government will do anything to kill a young psychic who knows their darkest secret. The only thing standing in their way is the self-preserving captain of the Serenity. A small agile little ship with a crew determined to survive and reveal the truth. This is the continuation of the short-lived sci-fi series Firefly(2000/01).

Review:
I’m going to start off this one by saying that I went in with low expectations, but came out pleasantly surprised. It had everything it needed to make it a good movie, but it fell short of a great movie. I was going to give it three out of five stars, until somebody pointed out that relative to other recent space operas (i.e. the Star Wars prequels), it stood out. I have to wonder if I would have thought more of it had I watched the show, but I’ll leave that for later.

Toy Story @ IMDB

Synopsis:
Andy got a toy for his birthday. It walks, it talks, it…..has an identity crisis?!?! Jealousy rages when a new toy becomes a young boys favorite. This is the first installment of the Toy Story franchise. It is the fillm that introduced us to Woody, an old school cowboy who’s used to being number one; Buzz, a futuristic spaceman who’s not quite sure who (or what) he is; Hamm, a pushy porker with a pension for pennies; Rex, a domesticated dino in need of therapy; and Mr. Potato Head, the opinionated hot head.

Review:
I should preface this review with a qualifier: most of my comments are about the DVD, not about the movie. The virtues of Toy Story as a film are worthy of another review. Though the fact that it is celebrating its 10th anniversary, makes such a review pointless. But I should do one, so here it is: the movie is great. That sums it up.
